Brands of Kibble I'd Personally Feed

Please note that I am not a vet. I am listing these as types of foods I'd consider feeding my own dogs because I often get asked by clients. But please do your own research on this.

Global Pet foods carries all of these, and is my all time favourite store, especially the Tottenham and Alliston Global Pet Foods.

There was a study done researching grain free kibble as being a potential cause of dilated cardiomyopathy in dogs. While some say this theory was debunked, others are not sure on this. My personal feeling is that it's best to play it safe and avoid grain free foods. I also avoid most of the big name brands.

I would rotate through these brands, and check ingredients to stay away from peas, legumes, chickpeas and potatoes.  You should be looking to feed oats or oatmeal, rice, barley or quinoa. It usually says good grains, healthy grains, grain inclusive, whole grains etc. Not grain free.

It's my belief that it's best to change up the diet (gradually when you make a switch) for a few reasons: so your dog is getting different nurtrients often, in case a certain food is recalled then at least I haven't been feeding it long, and so my dog's gut is used to change. I feel that dogs fed the same thing all the time become intolerant to change.

Every brand I mention below has grain free lines. You have to look carefully for their healthy grains lines.

Fromm has a few types that don't have peas. The Fromm Gold line is usually good but check the ingredients list to be sure it doesn't have peas, legumes, chickpeas or potato. Fromm Salmon A La Veg is without those things too. https://frommfamily.com/products/dog/gold/dry/large-breed-adult-gold/

Boreal has many grain free lines https://borealpetfood.com/Dogs/?category=2

And they have budget friendly bags that are a great price, and huge! https://borealpetfood.com/Dogs/Product/110  https://borealpetfood.com/Dogs/Product/11

Redpaw is great, but hard to find. Worth searching for. https://redpawdogfood.com/x-series/ I know that Lisa of Rovili's carries it and she delivers to many areas too.

Harlow - their Prime line is not grain free https://harlowblend.com/

Open Farm Ancient grains lines https://openfarmpet.com/en-ca/collections/dry-dog-food/

GO https://go-solutions.com/en-ca/dry-food-recipes-for-dogs but ONLY the recipes that say with grains.

First Mate Grain Friendly line https://firstmate.com/

Nature's Harvest has a few non grain free versions https://naturesharvest.ca/for-dogs/dry-food/

Oven Baked has some that are not grain free, read carefully https://www.ovenbakedtradition.com/en/

Horizon has a few different lines, two of them having Whole grains lines https://horizonpetfood.com/products/ Horizon's Taiga is very budget friendly and their bags are huge. They have grain free and whole grains so read carefully https://horizonpetfood.com/products/

I'd be constantly switching things up but switch gradually each time. I also recommend soaking kibble with water for 5 - 10 minutes before feeding. Crunchy kibble does not clean teeth! Think of eating chips, they all get stuck in your teeth. Think of eating apple sauce (soaked kibble) it doesn't get stuck.

I hope that helps, and please remember these are just my personal choices.
